SportsNight Episode 45: Where'd the Olympics Go?
August 25, 2008 11:05 AM PDT
Wait...it's over? Shouldn't someone have warned us this was coming? Your SportsNight crew, plus soon-to-be-frequent-guests Serge and Vinny G, wrap up the Olymipcs for you, including a rundown of how all the Long Beach Olympians did. Here's a hint: We win. We also have some season previews of Long Beach State Women's Soccer and Volleyball, and everyone's favorite feature (whether they like it or not): Top 5 Off the Field. SportsNight: We are the Olympic flame.
August 19, 2008 01:14 AM PDT
Do you got it? Cuz we got it bad, baby: Olympic fever! Is it the world records falling left and right, the amazing storylines, or the fact that there are a number of Long Beach athletes absolutely playing out of their minds? To be honest, it's all of them--but especially that last one!
August 11, 2008 12:48 AM PDT
Yep, we've got more Olympic coverage here than you can shake a stick at, including a rundown of how our dozen-plus local athletes are doing (hint: undefeated!), as well as the top stories from the Olympics at large. All that, plus the return of Serge, and a Top 5 Off the Field? No wonder we're called the Phelps of local sports podcasts! SportsNight Episode 42: We Get the Hook...
August 05, 2008 01:53 AM PDT
That's right, it's a jam-packed summer doldrums kind of week, with Olympics, football, Manny, and much much more to talk about. Plus the departure of our old friend--and original SportsNight co-host--Ryan Kobane, who makes a special appearance, and makes us run on so long, we actually get the hook! On our own show! Can you believe it? It's SportsNight--less painful than a good friend moving to New York...
July 29, 2008 02:03 AM PDT
Back from the AVP and Comic-Con, the SportsNight boys do their regular weekly thing bringing you all the latest news in Long Beach sports, including some heartbreaking Olympic news, a very special game of the week (if you think it might be an eating contest...well, you're right), and more Top 5 Off the Field than you can shake a stick at! SportsNight just went pro, folks. Thanks for riding with us!
July 22, 2008 12:02 AM PDT
The SportsNight crew is back once again, with Long Beachian Olympians updates, reports on Hall of Fame season, more mockery of Oklahoma City, and an argument about the ESPYS at the top of the show that cannot be missed. We'd go on about ourselves, but really, we're 40, and it's coming on nap time...
July 15, 2008 12:00 AM PDT
You read it right, the guys who often forget how to pronounce their own names are dropping a comedic gem right into your laps. We laugh our way through HR Derby news, Olympic talk, a Fight Night in the 'Myd report, and the best ever Top 5 (Top 5! (Top 5!)) Off the Field segment. Stat Boy says we have a verbal typo: when JJ talks about the Yanks crowd boos Evan Longoria, pretend he says Chase Utley. The bastards did boo Longoria, though...maybe they have a gripe with Long Beachians. Anyway, in tribute we've eliminated the PT Slam. Let he who is without error cast the first Slam...
July 07, 2008 11:49 PM PDT
Your boys are back with more news on Long Beachians (Long Beachians?) in the Olympics, an analysis of Long Beach State's basketball schedule, some NFL updates and tall tales, and the return of the PT Slam. Believe us, it's a doozy. All that, plus we mangle the Olympic theme song, Mike blows a no-hitter for the Dojers, and much, much more. Easter egg: we rearranged the seating order this week. Can you guess who's where?
July 01, 2008 12:49 AM PDT
Yes sports fans, we're forced to confront an unpleasant but inescapable fact: there's not a lot going on right now. Still, we dug deep and uncovered some Long Beach Olympic news, discuss who the greatest Long Beach athletes of all time are, and try to figure out how to pass the time before football season starts. Plus a can't-miss top 5 off the field and...THE MOST DANGEROUS SPORTSNIGHT SEGMENT EVER RECORDED?!?!?!? You know it!
June 22, 2008 09:58 PM PDT
That's right, you read that big ol' title correctly, it's the first annual SportsNight Moore League Awards! We hand out hearty rounds of applause to the best coach, team, player, and program of the year, as well as a few special awards and plenty of healthy debate. This is a don't-miss episode!
June 16, 2008 12:10 AM PDT
Happy Dad's Day, all you dads and kids; we hope you had a good one, filled with golf, racing, and basketball (and maybe some Special Olympics action?). Your boys have you covered with coverage of all the above mentioned events, as well as CSULB NCAA Championship news, and a Moore League Awards update. Check it out for your listentainment! Thanks to Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip, Morning Outside of Provo, and our Garageband Jazz Classics for this week's music. If you've got a band you'd like promoted through the show, holler at us!
June 09, 2008 12:23 AM PDT
Think just because there's no games going on we won't find something to talk about? Wrongo! We've got CSULB and Prep news as usual, plus our experiences at a few different banquets honoring Long Beach athletes, and some great stories from JJ about hobnobbing with the rich and famous at ESPN the Magazine's Revenge of the Jocks launch party. Plus, top 5 off the field! Sports Night: it's indispensable.
June 02, 2008 01:40 PM PDT
It's a downer kind of day in Long Beach, with two baseball teams exiting their respective tournaments in the last few days...but hey, at least the weather was nice, right?
May 25, 2008 11:38 PM PDT
Yet another big week for LB sports with good news about Wilson and Poly, and GREAT news about the Dirtbags and Blair Field.
May 19, 2008 01:34 AM PDT
It's hot outside, but it's cool in here! Mike is home, and JJ couldn't be more excited. Long Beach baseball is coming down the home stretch, Dirtbags and Moore League alike. Where are the games this week? What will they mean? The answers to those questions, and a few road trip tips from two road warriors are all here... just press play. Thanks again to Conor Izzett and Killer Beats for the killer beats. It's Sports Night, right now!

May 06, 2008 02:38 AM PDT
We took a three day weekend for Cinco de Mayo, but we're back and as strong as ever with coverage and updates of everything from Moore League baseball to Long Beach State and LBCC. Who's the best in Moore League baseball? We hand out our Best of the Moore League Awards, and lay down our thoughts on coaching in professional sports. We'll also tell you how Long Beach State women's tennis is a perfect example of the Athletic Program's rising success and how the softball team is ready to wrap up the Big West regular season title. Also, stick around through the end of the episode to hear about the latest big move in the Long Beach State basketball program, and how it will change the program's landscape. And, Top Five Off The Field!!! It's SportsNight, and even though it's extra long, it's still.... Right Now!
April 28, 2008 12:36 AM PDT
Do Long Beach State Teams Ever Lose? Yes & No Mostly no. But regardless, there was plenty of drama this weekend on the Long Beach State playing field/court. Defeat with a twist for the men's volleyball team, records fall on the softball field, the tennis team asserts itself and a Dirtbags sweep. Also, a Moore League baseball showdown that could change the standings - which, you may have heard, have Lakewood in first and juggernaut Wilson in second! Just click below to hear all about it! Plus! J.J. is a racing fan. There's proof in the podcast! See what a 'lil Grand Prix can do? This is, of course, Sports Night! "True that." Sports Night: Episode 27: Grand Prix Chronicles
April 21, 2008 12:33 AM PDT
The LBPOSTSports team gives it to you straight - everything you've wanted to know about the weekend's Grand Prix, the city's biggest and most famous event.
April 14, 2008 12:44 AM PDT
With the sun scorching down on everyone in Long Beach, Sports Night decided there's no time like the present to introduce the podcast's inaugural Outdoor Edition, recording on Ryan's backyard picnic table. In keeping with the theme, the boys touch on all the latest Long Beach sports news - from Masters coverage to more trouble at Blair field, Little League Golf, a very quick local swimmer and a champion boxer, plus those smoking hot softball ladies at Long Beach State and of course a complete preview leading up to this weekend's Long Beach Grand Prix. April 07, 2008 10:21 AM PDT
With Sports Night co-founder Mike on an awesome road trip, remaining members Ryan and J.J. take the podcast on a road trip of its own - from Mike's couch to J.J.'s couch. We also invite a handful of friends (Sergio, Vince and Darren) onto the loveseat to discuss the Dirtbags' recent troubles (dropping 8 of the last 9! Ho-hum. Another week, another round of impressive performances from the city’s best athletes. Long Beach State had a stellar weekend, while several local high schools have asserted themselves among the region’s – and the nation’s – best. We kick things off with a colorful Telegram Slam, catch you up to date on all the latest local sports news and veer off track a little bit to exchange stories about everyone’s favorite #23. The boys bring you the 22nd Sports Night podcast from the comfort of Mike's couch and the sweet smell of Dirtbag baseball from Blair Field, to touch on everything from Long Beach Poly's third straight girls basketball state title to Wilson High's recent dominance and Long Beach State's successes on the diamond. March 10, 2008 01:04 AM PDT
If Long Beach is truly the city of champions, this week proved it. The Sports Night crew rounds up all of the city's goings-on, including one regional state champ, two national champions and two National Players of the Week. With all of this local success, why do some of the city's sportswriters choose to write about Bill Walton and WW2? We don't know either. Check out all of the games you can't miss this week, including our Game 'O Da Week and an invitation to Get On Da Bus! Plus our top five stories off the field and the worst warm up music of all time! (Also, go to http://stations.espn.go.com/stations/710espn/story?id=scsa2008 to vote for Jasmine Dixon in 710 ESPN's High School Female Athlete Of The Year Poll. At this point, we really don't know what else she has to do to prove it) Sports Night... ...right now!
March 03, 2008 01:54 AM PST
You thought our tenth episode was a big deal? This one is, like, twice that! It seemed like Long Beach sports hit a drought for about two weeks in February before EXPLODING with world-class sporting events, one right after the other. THe boys break down everything in the world of LB athletics, from Long Beach Poly's third straight women's basketball CIF championship to Wilson's improbable women's soccer co-championship. Plus ev-er-y-thing Long Beach State sports and that massive announcement that you've been waiting for all these years! (Weeks?) Happy 20th episode to us and you!
February 25, 2008 12:16 AM PST
Soooooooo much to talk about going on in this great city of ours. As Mike alliterationally puts it, "A hefty heaping o' high school basketball." Mike, J.J. and Ryan recap the week that was in Long Beach State basketball (men's and women's), baseball and volleyball (men's), local high school basketball (men's and women's) and oh-so-much more. A special Oscar segment including our suggestions to spark up the awards show: make it more like the Super Bowl! A top five list for all you entertainment buffs. Our latest Game 'O Da Week recommendation and a special announcement wrap up the latest episode of LBPost.com Sports Night... ...right now!

Jason Leffler drives the red/black #38 Toyota for Braun Racing in NASCAR’s Nationwide Series, but he was born and bred here in Long Beach. Leffler was honored Wednesday night at Smooth’s Bar & Grille for his career achievements in all forms of racing, and his helmet and racing suit will be hung on the walls alongside other local racing greats (including driving legend and Leffler’s mentor, Parnelli Jones!). Leffler took some time out to sit down with me and discuss Saturday’s race in Fontana, growing up a racing fan in Long Beach and the city’s best streets for driving. The audio is a little diffivult to hear due to a packed house at Smooth's, so you may want to read the transcription at lbpost.com to follow along. Thanks, and good luck on Saturday Jason!

(Editor's Note: Yes, that Press-Telegram ad is real. And is not a joke. We've had much heated debate over this.) Don't you wish you had a one-stop shop for local Long Beach sports? We do too - that would make it a lot easier when we're trying to come up with material for our podcasts. Alas, there isn't one, so we're going to try to provide that service for you. Check out the latest episode for updates on local high school basketball teams in the playoffs, a complete Long Beach State schedule and exactly what you'll be doing this weekend. Also, a very special "Telegram Slam" that we've been holding off on, but is just too good to pass up. Top 5 stories off the field wraps us up here from Mike's couch. Sports Night... ...right now!
February 11, 2008 03:46 AM PST
Sports Night opens the newest episode with a post-game interview with Long Beach State volleyball star Paul Lotman following the 49ers' drubbing of UC San Diego. Check out what the man himself has to say about Long Beach's undefeated season, as well as his thoughts on mustaches. The Moore League sends three local teams to the high school basketball tournament and we break down the match-ups for you. Check us out in the stands at our fourth official Game 'O Da Week! Another installment of the Top Five Off The Field stories and an oh-so-special Telegram Slam. Sports Night... right now!
February 04, 2008 01:57 AM PST
What... a... game. Oh, you didn't think that the Sports Night crew was just going to have a normal Super Bowl party, did you? The LBPOST.com and Sports Night co-hosted a Super Sunday party at Smooth's Bar and Grille down on Pine and recorded a live, hour-long special Super Bowl edition available here! The place was packed and jumping with Giants fans (or Patriots haters). It was truly a family affair, with Mike's (prophetic) mom, J.J.'s dad and Ryan's dad all in attendance and joining us on the podcast. We also stepped aside for a ladies' segment hosted by Mike's wife Shar, J.J.'s girlfriend Tracy and Ryan's girlfriend Nikol, who offered some suggestions on how we should fill our Sundays now that the NFL season is over. Plenty of predictions, updates and game reactions, plus some very special interviews with former Dirtbag and current Devil Ray third baseman Evan Longoria, Smooth's owner John Morris on local sports legends and his thoughts on the NFL in Long Beach, and a quick word and announcement from LBPOST.com creator and publisher Robert Garcia. In Mike's words, "We hope your Super Bowl was half as fun as ours... but it wasn't." Peace! Sports Night: Episode Fifteen (!!!)
January 28, 2008 02:29 AM PST
A jam-packed fifteenth episode of Long Beach Sports Night comes at you, with a complete local basketball round-up - including a shocking change at Long Beach State, Long Beach Poly seeking revenge and the Sports Night Game O' Da Week. (You do not want to miss this week's feature game) Also, the latest Telegram Slam and our Top 5 Things That Will Get Your Fan Card Revoked (aka Things That Other Sports Fans Do That Make Us Mad). To wrap it up three things you need to do sports-wise in the city this week. Concluding, of course, with more details about our massive Super Bowl party at Smooth's this Sunday. See you there, and thanks for listening!

J.J. Fiddler and Mike Guardabascio are in a room full of football fans, delivering insightful moans and grunts as they watch 7 glorious hours of championship football. It's a little late, but here comes lucky number 13...keep your eyes peeled for the next episode, soon to come.
January 07, 2008 02:14 PM PST
If you haven't heard, the Chargers won yesterday. Oh, you had heard? We're going to tell you all about it anyway. Diehard Chah-gah fan Mike was at the game, and fellow nut J.J. developed a clever scheme to stay informed even while working retail. Kudos. All the analysis and joy from two of the Bolts' biggest fans. Also, it's been a long season for both men's and women's Long Beach State basketball - and we're only now beginning conference play. Ryan and J.J. break down the 49ers' play, and explain what needs to happen for them to find success. Shh. Do you hear that? It's Sports Night!
January 02, 2008 03:20 AM PST
Welcome back, friends! The LBPost.com Sports Night podcast rings in the New Year with Episode Eleven, and only 1/3 hungover! A long day of watching college football and recounting the past year's successes and mistakes has left us reflective, so in the latest installment we wax poetic on the biggest Long Beach sports stories of 2007, wax disgusted at the latest Press Telegram follies, and wax optimistic about our New Year's resolutions. Join in the fun!
December 19, 2007 12:56 AM PST
Tuesday night's 71-68 victory over the University of San Francisco marked a milestone for the Cal State Long Beach men's basketball team: once again they ended up in a scrappy, last-minute contest - only this time they came out on top. Episode Ten comes at you on location from the Pyramid directly after the game, and includes postgame quotes from head coach Dan Monson and two-guard Donovan Morris, who poured in a career high 26 points in the win. Similarly, the LBPOST Sports Night podcast reached a milestone with its TENTH EPISODE! This Special Edition pays homage to the now-defunct television show that inspired us to do this, with our favorite clips and quotes spliced into our commentary. It makes this episode a must-listen for anyone who missed the TV show while it was on air. Plus! Three big announcements (one of them is that we have a call-in lie now, call in! 206-984-1503). Leave us some love in the comments section or on the new phone line, enjoy the postgame coverage, anniversary celebration and special announcements, and have a great holiday!
December 09, 2007 10:36 PM PST
This is more of that ol' filler text, here till ZumMallen puts up that ol' finished text. This week we neglect to mention the NFL (in Long Beach at least) even once, focusing on our wrapup of Moore League football, with lots of awards and rounds of applause handed out. Plus, fight night and a quick NFL breakdown.
December 05, 2007 08:00 AM PST
Big news all around as Long Beach Poly marches on to another CIF Final, Long Beach State women's volleyball takes a tumble in the NCAA tournament and Mike finds a reasonable way to raise millions of dollars to build an NFL stadium in Long Beach - and we're all shocked that we're the ones bringing this up. Right after we get that stadium built, we'll fix all of the rest of Long Beach's problems. This is Sports Night - changing the city one sport at a time.
November 25, 2007 09:42 PM PST
It's been a busy week in sports, both for the Long Beach and greater Los Angeles areas. Don't you worry - Sports Night covers it all from high school football to women's college volleyball, and yes, more NFL talk. The Telegram Slam also makes its sophomore appearance on the show, and we throw in some commentary about an article in this week's District Weekly - ya know, in the interest of fairness. You're tuned in to the most comprehensive local sports information around, right now!
November 20, 2007 04:10 AM PST
Had enough of all the talk about an NFL team coming to Long Beach? We haven't either! In this episode of the LBPOST.com Sports Night podcast, the boys iron out all (yes, all) issues preventing an NFL team from coming to Long Beach, bring on the ladies of Sports Night to pick a team name and colors, rant about the Lakers, Long Beach State women's volleyball and men's basketball, and much more. Our new weekly "Telegram Slam" feature makes its debut, in which we'll pick and prod at sports writers from the Long Beach Press-Telegram. This week, J.J. and Mike take on Bob Keisser and Doug Krikorian. Anybody need a ride to Long Beach Poly's 2nd round playoff game this weekend??? Mike has an extra seat in his car - reserve your spot now with a comment on the page! You're listening to the LBPOST Sports Night podcast. Go Tar-Lance-Babe-Rabbit-Rams! Sports Night: Episode Five
November 13, 2007 03:31 AM PST
Is it possible that the NFL could be on its way to Long Beach? Yes, THAT NFL. Sports Night breaks it down for you. Also, the Moore League sends three talented teams to the playoffs this Friday, and find out exactly who's to blame for Long Beach State's 74-34 home loss in the men's basketball season opener.
November 06, 2007 02:38 AM PST
Two football showdowns of the decade: The boys of Long Beach Sports Night break down both the Pats/Colts matchup and bring you extensive coverage of the battle between Long Beach Poly (5-1) and Compton (6-0). Poly snuck out of Compton with the 42-14 victory, but J.J. and Mike explain why the Jackrabbits' 73rd consecutive Moore League victory wasn't as simple as the score would indicate. Sports Night also welcomes long time friend Conor, fresh from a trip across the pond with tales of the fever of European rugby. Also, why does a local sportswriter claim that Poly's winning streak is a bad thing for Long Beach sports? Sports Night sets things straight.
October 30, 2007 11:00 PM PDT
Mike, Ryan and J.J. (the Brett Favres of podcasting) send some listener shout-outs, rant about the titanic Patriots vs. Colts matchup, the high school showdown of the decade and what the Dodgers and Angels NEED to do.
October 23, 2007 02:04 AM PDT
The boys of the Sports Night podcast banter about the Long Beach high school football scene, and our favorite things about local sports.

Podcast SummaryWe're a bunch of guys that won't shut up about sports. The program began at Long Beach State's weekly newspaper and lives on even after graduation. We employ resident experts (and sometimes just our buddies) to answer the big questions: Is that QB helmet sticker green or yellow? Do sports commentators have better memories than goldfish? And is there anything on Earth better than Long Beach sports? (Green, no, and no) About SportsNightThe famous Sports Night podcast makes its triumphant return to the airwaves with its partnership with LBPOST.com. J.J. Fiddler, Mike Guardabascio and Ryan ZumMallen began the program as writers with Cal State Long Beach's Union Weekly newspaper. But as the hosts graduated from college, so too did the program - from the office of a student newspaper to the primetime. Fans of this Show
